From Cancer Fight to Super Bowl: Ex-Lions Coach Terrell Williams Makes Emotional Return
Former Detroit Lions coach Terrell Williams will join the New England Patriots at Super Bowl LX after stepping away earlier this season to undergo treatment for prostate cancer.
Williams, who spent the 2024 season as the Lions’ defensive running game coordinator and defensive line coach, was hired by the Patriots as defensive coordinator in January 2025. However, his role was put on hold in September when head coach Mike Vrabel revealed that Williams had been diagnosed with cancer and would be stepping away to focus on his health.
“Terrell Williams was determined to have prostate cancer and is in the process of treatment,” Vrabel said at the time. “We want to send our regards and let everybody know that’s what he’s dealing with.”
In Williams’ absence, inside linebackers coach Zak Kuhr assumed play-calling duties for New England’s defense.
On Thursday, Vrabel provided a positive update, announcing that Williams is doing well and will travel with the Patriots to Santa Clara for the Super Bowl matchup against the Seattle Seahawks.
Patriots wide receiver Stefon Diggs praised Williams’ determination, calling him a “road warrior” and emphasizing how much his presence means to the team.
Although Williams coached in Detroit for just one season, he left a lasting impression on the Lions’ locker room. Lions head coach Dan Campbell previously described him as a highly intelligent coach with a rare ability to connect with players on an individual level.
“He treated every player different,” Campbell said. “Some guys he prodded, some guys he loved up, some guys he whispered to — he understands how to make people go. Unbelievable dude, unbelievable human being.”
