The New York Giants face a major offseason choice regarding the future of edge rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux.
Selected fifth overall in the 2022 NFL Draft, Thibodeaux entered the league with massive expectations. While he has flashed potential, the former Oregon standout hasn’t yet become the elite defensive force the Giants envisioned when they drafted him. With his contract nearing its end, New York may be open to exploring trade options rather than committing long-term.
According to A to Z Sports writer Mike Payton, one possible landing spot could be the Detroit Lions. Payton suggests that Lions general manager Brad Holmes should strongly consider making a move for Thibodeaux, citing both roster fit and contract flexibility. With the Giants already featuring Brian Burns and Abdul Carter on the edge, they may be willing to part with Thibodeaux while they still can.
Another factor working in Detroit’s favor is contractual control. Thibodeaux is set to play on his fifth-year option, which carries a salary of roughly $14 million, giving the acquiring team an additional season to evaluate him before deciding on an extension. Payton believes a deal could potentially be completed for a future second-round draft pick, assuming Thibodeaux doesn’t explode statistically in the near future.
From New York’s standpoint, moving Thibodeaux could be logical. The Giants already have two established starters at the position, leaving Thibodeaux without a clear path to being a focal point of the defense. A change of scenery could benefit both sides, especially for a player still searching for consistency.
Detroit, meanwhile, may be in the market for edge help with veteran Al-Quadin Muhammad expected to reach free agency. Although injuries have limited Thibodeaux in recent seasons, his 2023 campaign showed his upside when healthy, as he recorded 11.5 sacks and generated 43 quarterback pressures.
Slotting Thibodeaux alongside Aidan Hutchinson would give the Lions an explosive and youthful pass-rushing tandem, potentially transforming their defensive front. Given Thibodeaux’s reduced trade value and expiring deal, Detroit wouldn’t be taking on significant risk.
If the Giants ultimately decide to move on, Detroit could provide Thibodeaux with the opportunity to reset his career, take on a larger role, and position himself for a lucrative contract down the line—possibly as soon as 2027.
