Tensions boiled over after the Week 6 matchup between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Detroit Lions, culminating in a heated altercation once the game had ended Monday night.
Following Kansas City’s 30–17 victory, emotions spilled onto the field as players gathered near midfield. Lions safety Brian Branch appeared to strike Chiefs wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster with an open hand during the post-game exchange. Moments earlier, Branch had seemingly bypassed Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes during the customary handshake line, though it’s uncertain whether that moment contributed to the confrontation.
Video footage suggests that Smith-Schuster may have been exchanging words with Branch as the clock expired, which could have escalated the situation. Branch then reacted by delivering the blow, igniting the brief scuffle.
Given that Branch initiated physical contact, disciplinary action from the league is likely. He has already faced fines earlier this season, making further financial penalties a strong possibility. Smith-Schuster could also be subject to league review if officials determine his response crossed a line.
The incident reflected a frustrating evening for Detroit. Kansas City controlled much of the contest, securing a decisive win over the NFC opponent.
Looking ahead, the Lions aim to rebound in Week 7 when they face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before heading into their bye week. Meanwhile, the Chiefs will return home to take on the Las Vegas Raiders in their next outing.
