The Detroit Lions could address their growing offensive line concerns this offseason by signing a former starter from a division rival.
Detroit is once again facing uncertainty at one of the most important positions in football: left tackle. Veteran starter Taylor Decker, now 32 years old, is reportedly considering retirement. The Lions do not currently have a clear replacement on the roster, as Giovanni Manu has struggled to develop into a reliable option.
With a potential hole looming on the blind side, Detroit is expected to explore the free-agent market. NFL insider Daniel Jeremiah recently revealed that the Lions are “doing a lot of homework on free-agent tackles,” signaling that a move could be coming soon.
Lions Could Target Bears Free Agent Braxton Jones
One name that could emerge as a realistic option is Braxton Jones of the Chicago Bears.
Jones is entering free agency after four seasons in Chicago. The 25-year-old offensive tackle missed much of the 2025 season due to a knee injury. By the time he returned for the playoffs, he had lost his starting job to Ozzy Trapilo and Theo Benedet. With the Bears overhauling their offensive line under new leadership, it is unlikely they will re-sign Jones.
Despite a down year, Jones brings valuable experience. He has started 44 games over the past four seasons and has shown the ability to protect the quarterback at a high level. In 2024, Jones posted a career-best 80.8 Pro Football Focus pass-blocking grade, allowing just 26 pressures on 471 pass-blocking snaps.
Being only one season removed from that performance, Jones could provide solid depth or even compete for a starting role in Detroit.
Draft and Internal Options Remain on the Table
The Lions currently hold the 17th overall pick in the upcoming NFL Draft and could target a rookie left tackle there. General manager Brad Holmes is known for sticking to his draft board and selecting the player he believes in most, regardless of position.
Another possible solution would be shifting Penei Sewell back to left tackle. Sewell played extensively on the left side during his rookie season and remains one of Detroit’s most versatile linemen. The Lions could then search for a right tackle through free agency or the draft.
Signing Jones Would Strengthen Competition
Whether Detroit chooses to trust a rookie or move Sewell to left tackle, adding Jones would create much-needed competition at the position. Giovanni Manu has not shown enough progress to justify another season as the primary backup, and replacing him with a proven starter like Jones would be a significant upgrade.
If the Lions are serious about protecting their quarterback and maintaining a strong offensive line, signing Braxton Jones could be a smart and affordable move that weakens a rival while strengthening Detroit’s roster.
