Detroit Lions Expected to Add Former Vikings Edge Rusher Worth $12.5 Million

The Detroit Lions have been searching for more depth at edge rusher after losing players like Al-Quadin Muhammad, Tyrus Wheat, and Josh Paschal in the offseason.

They’ve now taken a step toward addressing that need. Earlier this week, the Lions brought in D.J. Wonnum for a free-agent visit, and the meeting quickly led to a deal between both sides.

As reported by NFL insider Adam Schefter, Wonnum has agreed to a one-year contract with Detroit that could be worth as much as $6 million.

Schefter shared on social media that the agreement was confirmed by Wonnum’s agents, Kevin Conner and Robert Brown of Universal Sports Management.

Wonnum entered the league as a fourth-round pick (117th overall) by the Minnesota Vikings in the 2020 NFL Draft after playing college football at South Carolina. Notably, he suffered a season-ending injury during the 2023 campaign in a matchup against Detroit while still with Minnesota.

After his stint with the Vikings, Wonnum signed a two-year, $12.5 million deal with the Carolina Panthers. In the most recent season, he recorded 42 tackles, three sacks, three pass breakups, and an interception across 15 starts.

Throughout his career, Wonnum has totaled 30 sacks along with 250 tackles, including 32 for loss—numbers that make him a recognizable name for Lions fans.
