The Detroit Lions may have quietly revealed part of their long-term thinking about the offensive line.

During an appearance on the Lions Collective podcast, general manager Brad Holmes shared insight into how the team evaluates the tackle positions. His comments also hinted at something significant regarding star lineman Penei Sewell.

According to Holmes, adaptability along the offensive line is a key part of Detroit’s strategy. That mindset could eventually lead to a notable adjustment within the unit.

Detroit Sees Value in Larry Borom

Holmes spent part of the discussion talking about recently added offensive lineman Larry Borom, making it clear the organization believes he brings legitimate upside.

The Lions originally evaluated Borom closely during the draft process, and that interest continued once he entered the NFL. Holmes explained that Detroit had plenty of chances to watch Borom play multiple positions while he was with the Chicago Bears.

What stood out even more was Borom’s recent film with the Miami Dolphins, particularly his performance at right tackle. Holmes noted that Borom appeared especially steady in that role compared with other positions he has played.

While Borom has the ability to line up at guard or left tackle, the Lions believe his most consistent work has come on the right side of the line. Because of that, Detroit views him as more than just a backup option.

Holmes emphasized that Borom has significant starting experience, which gives the team confidence in his ability to contribute if needed.

A Signing That Made Sense for Detroit

Beyond his versatility, Borom also checked several other boxes for the organization. Holmes indicated that Borom’s skill set fits what Detroit looks for in offensive linemen, and his contract structure also worked well within the team’s financial plans.

The combination of affordability, positional flexibility, and proven experience made him an appealing addition.

That type of move aligns with the roster-building philosophy Holmes has followed since arriving in Detroit—targeting players who can provide value while filling multiple potential roles.

What It Could Mean for Penei Sewell

Holmes’ comments became even more interesting when the conversation turned to Sewell.

The general manager acknowledged that Sewell’s versatility gives the Lions options, including the possibility of him lining up at left tackle. Sewell has experience on that side of the line, so the transition would not be unfamiliar territory for him.

Because of that flexibility, Detroit approached free agency without feeling forced to pursue a specific tackle position. Instead, the front office focused on identifying the best available linemen and leaving room to adjust the lineup later.

Holmes never directly stated that Sewell will move to the left side, but his remarks suggested the team is open to different combinations along the offensive line.

With Borom capable of handling right tackle duties and Sewell comfortable on either side, Detroit has the freedom to experiment with multiple configurations.

In the modern NFL, that kind of adaptability can be a major advantage.

Holmes did not officially announce any changes, but his explanation offered a glimpse into how the Lions are thinking about their offensive line moving forward.
