Taylor Decker Reveals Shocking Dispute With Detroit Lions Over Pay Cut, Communication Breakdown

Taylor Decker Reveals Rift With Detroit Lions Over Contract, Communication Breakdown

Veteran offensive tackle Taylor Decker has opened up about his split from the Detroit Lions, pointing to a breakdown in communication and unexpected contract demands as key reasons behind his departure.

In a social media post on March 6, Decker announced that he had requested his release, citing “surprising” discussions with the organization.

“In my weeks since notifying the team of my return, there have been numerous discussions—many of which were a surprise to me—and we could not find common ground,” Decker wrote.

Contract Dispute Led to Fallout

After contemplating retirement due to injuries and time away from family, Decker ultimately decided to return for an 11th NFL season. However, he made it clear during exit interviews in January that he was not willing to take a pay cut.

According to Decker, the situation changed unexpectedly when the Lions later informed his agent that a reduced salary would be required for him to remain with the team. The veteran tackle declined the idea immediately, and negotiations never progressed to specific numbers.

Lions GM Brad Holmes Responds

Lions general manager Brad Holmes addressed the situation earlier in the week, disputing the idea that the team’s stance should have come as a surprise.

Holmes suggested the only unexpected element was the timing of Decker’s public announcement.

“It all starts with communication—what you communicate with the player and the agent,” Holmes said. “There was really no surprises.”

Communication Breakdown Frustrated Decker

Despite Holmes’ comments, Decker maintains that communication issues played a major role in the fallout.

The veteran said he spoke with head coach Dan Campbell about his return but did not receive follow-up communication. He also claimed that Holmes did not respond to his attempts to reach out.

More personally, Decker expressed disappointment that no one from team leadership contacted him to thank him for his decade of service.

Since his last conversation with Campbell in February, Decker reportedly heard nothing further from the organization and had to initiate contact himself with offensive line coach Hank Fraley.

Decker Views Split as Final

After 10 seasons with the Lions, Decker had hoped for a more meaningful conclusion to his time with the franchise. While Holmes left the door open for a potential reunion, Decker does not share that optimism.

He considers the separation final but has expressed interest in signing a one-day contract in the future to officially retire as a Lion.
