Dan Campbell gets a cautionary note about the Detroit Lions in the newest NFL head coach rankings.
Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell has built a reputation as one of the most intense and straightforward leaders in the NFL. His passionate, no-nonsense approach and unwavering loyalty to his players have made him widely respected inside the locker room. Since he took over the team, the Lions’ roster turnover has mostly been linked to injuries or front-office financial decisions rather than any friction caused by Campbell’s personality. For many players, his style represents the ideal football coach.
That reputation is part of the reason Patrick Daugherty of NBC Sports ranked Campbell eighth in his latest list of NFL head coaches heading into the 2026 season. Daugherty acknowledged some concerns, particularly pointing out how Detroit’s performance slipped noticeably during the 2025 campaign. However, he stopped short of blaming Campbell’s leadership style for the downturn.
Despite last year’s struggles, Detroit has an opportunity to bounce back. Changes at offensive coordinator and the potential return of healthier defensive personnel could help stabilize the team. Injuries on defense last season significantly hurt the Lions’ ability to close out games, forcing the offense to carry much of the burden. Without consistent defensive stops in key moments, their chances of winning naturally declined.
Even so, Campbell still ranks as the highest-graded head coach within the NFC North on Daugherty’s list. Matt LaFleur sits at No. 10, Kevin O’Connell is 12th, and Ben Johnson appears at 13th. Several well-established NFC coaches remain ahead of Campbell overall, including Sean McVay at No. 1, Kyle Shanahan at No. 3, and Mike Macdonald at No. 4.
Daugherty also suggested that Detroit could still be dealing with a lingering “hangover” from the disappointing 2025 season. With the draft only recently completed, questions remain about how the Lions intend to strengthen their offensive line and improve their pass-rush depth. The safety position is another area of uncertainty, especially with the status of Kerby Joseph still unclear as training camp approaches.
