Several Detroit Lions players grieve the loss of former teammate Chris Payton-Jones.

According to multiple reports, former Detroit Lions cornerback Chris Payton-Jones died Saturday night following a deadly car accident in Florida.

Payton-Jones first connected with the Lions organization in 2018 after going undrafted out of University of Nebraska–Lincoln, where he spent four seasons playing college football. Although he did not make Detroit’s final roster that year, he eventually returned to the team in 2020 after spending two seasons with the Arizona Cardinals. The Lions signed him off Arizona’s practice squad in September 2020, and he appeared in one game for Detroit that season.

Even though his time with the Lions was brief, Payton-Jones clearly left a strong impression on teammates. Following news of his death on Sunday, several former colleagues shared tributes and messages of grief across social media.

Former Lions safety Quandre Diggs wrote “RIH my dawg” in an Instagram post. Cornerback Amik Robertson—who played alongside Payton-Jones with the Las Vegas Raiders in 2022—reacted with a shocked message online. Other former Detroit players, including Kerryon Johnson, Tyrell Crosby, and Darius Slay, also shared the news and paid their respects.

Over the course of his professional career, Payton-Jones spent time with several NFL teams, including the Lions, Cardinals, Minnesota Vikings, Tennessee Titans, and Raiders. He later continued his football journey in the United Football League, where he played three seasons—two with the St. Louis Battlehawks and one with the Seattle Sea Dragons. During his time in the spring league, he recorded 74 tackles, two interceptions, and 14 pass breakups, becoming a fan favorite. He also built a following through weekly YouTube videos that documented what life was like for a UFL player. In January, he announced that he was stepping away from football.

In response to his passing, the UFL released a statement honoring his legacy:

“The United Football League is grieving the heartbreaking loss of former St. Louis Battlehawks defensive back Chris Payton-Jones. He was a respected teammate and leader whose career reflected dedication, perseverance, and resilience. Beyond the field, Chris was known for his positive spirit and the relationships he built throughout the league. Whether interacting with fans, participating in media events, or sharing his journey through personal content, he approached everything with humility and authenticity. We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, teammates, and everyone affected by this tragic loss.”
