The Reality Facing Jared Goff and the Detroit Lions Is All Too Familiar for Los Angeles Rams Fans

In 2021, the Los Angeles Rams made a bold move by sending former No. 1 overall pick Jared Goff to the Detroit Lions in a blockbuster trade that brought Matthew Stafford to Los Angeles. The impact of that decision became clear very quickly. Within a year, Stafford led the Rams to victory in Super Bowl LVI, while Goff and the Lions have improved significantly but still haven’t managed to capture a championship.

The Rams’ choice to move on from Goff followed a difficult stretch after their appearance in Super Bowl LIII, where the team managed only three points in a loss. The seasons that followed in 2019 and 2020 failed to meet expectations, which ultimately pushed the organization to seek a different direction at quarterback. That change paid off immediately when Stafford helped deliver the franchise’s first Super Bowl title in more than 20 years.

Meanwhile, Goff has played an important role in helping the Lions become competitive again. Detroit has reached levels of success the franchise hadn’t seen in years, but the ultimate goal has remained just out of reach. According to analysis by Brad Berreman of SideLion Report, Lions supporters may eventually have to face a difficult question: whether Goff is capable of taking the team all the way to a championship.

Berreman referenced discussions from Mike Florio and Chris Simms of Pro Football Talk, who examined what Goff’s long-term outlook with Detroit might look like. He suggested that the skepticism surrounding Goff’s ability to win a title could have some merit.

He also noted that Sean McVay, the Rams’ head coach, eventually realized that continuing with Goff might limit the team’s championship potential. As soon as the opportunity presented itself, Los Angeles pivoted to a different quarterback. While many Lions fans hope Goff can guide the team to a Super Bowl appearance—or even a title—there remains a lingering question about whether that ceiling is truly attainable.

For followers of the Rams, this line of thinking isn’t surprising. Goff had solid moments during his tenure in Los Angeles, but it eventually became clear he wasn’t the ideal fit to fully unlock McVay’s offensive system. The franchise believed its championship ambitions required a change at the position.

Fortunately, the trade ultimately benefited both organizations. Stafford finally joined a legitimate contender and demonstrated his ability to lead a championship run, while Goff landed in Detroit, where he found support and stability. His performance has generally been strong with the Lions, though even earning the NFC’s top seed in the 2024 playoffs didn’t translate into a Super Bowl appearance for the franchise.

Now entering his age-32 season, discussions about Goff’s long-term role in Detroit could gradually intensify. Berreman compared the situation to what happened with the Kansas City Chiefs when they decided they had reached their limit with Alex Smith before drafting Patrick Mahomes—a decision that transformed the team’s future.

If the Lions eventually consider a similar strategy, it wouldn’t shock anyone who followed Goff’s earlier years in Los Angeles. For Rams fans, the possibility that Detroit might someday look for its next quarterback would simply echo a decision their team already made years ago.
