The Detroit Lions have consistently shown in recent years that they prioritize taking care of players they draft and develop.

And according to team leadership, that mindset isn’t going away anytime soon.

Lions Open to Early Contract Extensions

During a pre-draft event, team president Rod Wood discussed the organization’s outlook on extending young standouts such as Brian Branch and Sam LaPorta.

Wood indicated that Detroit may not need to wait until either player returns to game action before beginning serious discussions about long-term contracts.

He explained that the team plans to evaluate their progress and health, but their presence on the field isn’t necessarily required before extension talks start. He pointed to a similar situation involving Aidan Hutchinson, when the Lions began negotiating with him during training camp after he was recovering from an injury. While those negotiations took time due to the scale of the deal, the injury itself wasn’t the reason for the delay.

Health Will Be Considered—But Not the Deciding Factor

Wood acknowledged that medical evaluations will still play a role in the team’s decision-making process. However, he emphasized that health alone will not determine whether the Lions move forward with extensions.

The larger goal, he explained, is to retain the players the franchise has invested in through the draft.

That approach reflects a broader organizational philosophy: building a strong roster internally and keeping that core intact for the long term.

A Draft-and-Retain Strategy

Detroit has leaned heavily on the draft to construct its roster, and the front office has made it clear they’re willing to reward players early rather than waiting for their market value to rise.

Wood highlighted that while many teams claim they want to draft, develop, and re-sign their own players, few actually follow through the way Detroit has. By completing extensions earlier in the process, the Lions are often able to finalize deals before prices climb even higher.

Looking Ahead

There’s no certainty that new contracts for Branch or LaPorta will be finalized before the upcoming draft.

Still, the message from Detroit’s leadership is unmistakable.

The organization is already thinking long-term.

Both players have been important pieces in the Lions’ recent progress, and the team appears determined to keep them as part of its future.
