The Detroit Lions used a third-round selection in the 2023 NFL Draft to bring in quarterback Hendon Hooker, hoping he could eventually develop into a dependable option behind starter Jared Goff. Although Hooker occasionally showed potential, he struggled to deliver steady performances. By 2025, the Lions chose to move in a different direction, leading to the end of his time in Detroit.
After leaving the Lions, Hooker briefly spent time with both the New York Jets and the Carolina Panthers before becoming a free agent again this offseason. Now, the quarterback appears to have landed in a situation that could suit him well with the Tennessee Titans.
Titans general manager Mike Borgonzi recently shared positive remarks about Hooker following a workout, according to Titans insider Terry McCormick. Borgonzi noted that the team brought Hooker in for an evaluation and came away impressed. He described the quarterback as someone who performed well during the workout, carries strong character, and should be a valuable presence in the team’s quarterback room.
Such praise from the team’s front office could signal that Hooker is beginning to gain traction in his new environment. Still, earning a roster spot will not come easily. Tennessee already has multiple quarterbacks under contract heading into the 2026 season, including Cam Ward, Hooker, Will Levis, and Mitchell Trubisky. With a crowded depth chart, Hooker will likely have to compete hard for the third quarterback role on the roster.
The most probable scenario sees Ward serving as the starter while Trubisky handles the primary backup duties. That would leave Hooker and Levis battling for the final quarterback spot. Receiving early support from the Titans’ general manager could help Hooker’s chances as he works to secure that role.
Meanwhile, Detroit has already addressed its backup quarterback situation. The Lions reunited with veteran Teddy Bridgewater, who is expected to serve as the main backup behind Goff for the 2026 campaign.
For Hooker, a fresh start may be exactly what he needed. Early impressions from the Titans suggest the change of environment could help him regain momentum in his development. If he can show improved consistency when opportunities arise, the former Lion has the ability to establish himself as a dependable backup quarterback in the league.
Even though Detroit has moved on, Lions fans may still keep an eye on Hooker’s progress. The organization invested several years in his development, and it would be encouraging to see him finally find stability in Tennessee—even if that success ultimately comes with another team.
