Lions Hit With Disheartening News About $90 Million Star on the Defensive Line

The Detroit Lions had been mentioned as a possible destination for Dexter Lawrence, as the team continues searching for ways to strengthen its defensive front.

Lawrence, widely regarded as one of the top defensive tackles in the National Football League, has built an impressive résumé during his career. At just 28 years old, he has already recorded 341 tackles, 30.5 sacks, and earned three Pro Bowl selections.

Despite the New York Giants hoping to keep him, Lawrence’s tenure with the team has officially ended. The Giants traded the standout defender to the Cincinnati Bengals in exchange for the No. 10 overall selection in the 2026 NFL Draft, which is scheduled to take place later this month in Pittsburgh.

Lions Miss Out as Bengals Land Lawrence

NFL insider Adam Schefter was the first to break the news of the high-profile deal.

Schefter reported on social media that the Giants had agreed to send three-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence to Cincinnati in a trade centered around the 10th overall pick. As a result of the move, New York now enters draft night holding both the fifth and tenth selections.

He added that Cincinnati’s front office believed Lawrence would have a more immediate impact on the team’s success this season than whoever might be available with the No. 10 pick. Because of that belief, the Bengals chose to act aggressively rather than wait for the draft to unfold.

Detroit Was Previously Linked to the Star Defender

Before the trade was finalized, Brad Berreman suggested that Detroit could pursue a major deal to acquire Lawrence.

Berreman argued that if the Lions needed to include a 2027 second-round pick along with defensive tackle Alim McNeill to make the move happen, it would still be worthwhile. In his view, Detroit could move on from McNeill’s potentially burdensome contract and redirect those resources toward a higher-impact player at the same position, maximizing the team’s current Super Bowl window.

Giants Tried to Resolve Situation

Earlier in the week, newly appointed Giants head coach John Harbaugh explained that the organization had been attempting to find a resolution that would work for both the team and Lawrence.

Harbaugh said the franchise was focused on doing what was best for the Giants while also respecting Lawrence as both a person and a player. He emphasized that the team wanted him to be satisfied with the outcome and that the organization was handling the situation as responsibly as possible.

Ultimately, those efforts were not enough to keep the star defender in New York.

Lions Fans Still Watching Draft Strategy

Meanwhile, some Lions supporters remain uneasy about comments made by general manager Brad Holmes regarding the team’s approach to roster building ahead of the draft.

Holmes explained that he dislikes drafting a player primarily to fill a roster hole if there is another prospect the team actually values more. According to him, passing on a player the team truly believes in simply because of positional need can lead to second-guessing later, making it difficult to feel comfortable with the decision.

With the draft approaching, Detroit’s next moves will determine how the team addresses its remaining defensive needs.
