The New York Jets are positioning themselves to make a massive splash in the 2027 offseason. Armed with three first-round picks and projected salary cap space in the nine-figure range, the franchise could pursue elite talent — including Jack Campbell of the Detroit Lions.

Campbell, who earned First-Team All-Pro honors last season, could become one of the biggest defensive names on the 2027 free-agent market. The standout linebacker is currently scheduled to hit free agency after the season if Lions general manager Brad Holmes does not reach a long-term extension with him.

Holmes notably declined Campbell’s fifth-year option, which would have paid him roughly $22 million. The price tag was inflated because the National Football League groups outside linebackers and inside linebackers together when calculating option salaries.

A potential reunion with defensive coach Aaron Glenn — who previously worked with Campbell in Detroit — could make New York an appealing destination.

According to Pro Football Focus, Campbell ranked second among all linebackers thanks to his ability to dominate against the run while also excelling in pass coverage.

For several seasons, linebackers like Fred Warner of the San Francisco 49ers and Roquan Smith of the Baltimore Ravens have controlled the conversation around the league’s best linebackers. Campbell appears poised to challenge that dominance.

Detroit Lions Facing Tough Financial Decisions

The Lions could face serious salary cap pressure in the near future. Detroit has already committed significant money to quarterback Jared Goff, and star running back Jahmyr Gibbs is expected to receive a major contract extension soon.

With those financial commitments looming, Detroit may struggle to match what Campbell could command on the open market.
