Chicago Bears Competing With Detroit Lions for Veteran WR Scotty Miller After Tryout Report
The Chicago Bears significantly reshaped their wide receiver room this offseason, moving on from DJ Moore and Olamide Zaccheaus while adding Kalif Raymond and rookie Zavion Thomas.
Despite those changes, the Bears may not be finished upgrading their receiving corps ahead of the upcoming season.
According to Adam Schefter, Chicago has scheduled a tryout next week with former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Scotty Miller. However, the situation has quickly turned into a division race, as Miller reportedly visited the Detroit Lions earlier this week.
With both NFC North rivals showing interest, Chicago may need to move quickly if it hopes to land the veteran playmaker.
Bears Seeking Additional Depth at Wide Receiver
Even after their offseason additions, the Bears’ wide receiver depth behind Rome Odunze and Luther Burden remains uncertain.
Quarterback Caleb Williams will enter the new season with a significantly different receiving group than the one he worked with previously. While Odunze and Burden are expected to lead the offense on the outside, the rest of the depth chart still raises questions.
Third-round rookie Zavion Thomas was viewed by many analysts as a reach in the draft, leaving uncertainty about how quickly he can contribute at the NFL level.
Meanwhile, Jahdae Walker flashed potential late last season but remains largely unproven over a full year. Veteran addition Kalif Raymond has been a reliable depth receiver and return specialist during his time with the Detroit Lions, but he will turn 32 before the season begins.
Because of these factors, Chicago could benefit from bringing in another experienced receiver to compete during training camp.
Scotty Miller Could Provide Veteran Experience
Scotty Miller spent the past two seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers after following former head coach Arthur Smith to Pittsburgh.
Serving as the fifth receiver on the depth chart limited his opportunities. Miller finished last season with nine receptions for 62 yards and also contributed on special teams with two punt returns for 34 yards.
Earlier in his career, Miller played a key role for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers during their championship run in Super Bowl LV. However, a turf toe injury suffered in 2021 slowed his momentum, and the once-elite speed that made him dangerous downfield has diminished somewhat in recent years.
Still, his experience and versatility could make him an appealing depth option for the Bears.
Lions Also in the Mix for Miller
The Detroit Lions may not have as urgent a need at receiver after signing Greg Dortch and drafting Kendrick Law to join a room that already features Amon‑Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams, and Isaac TeSlaa.
Because of that depth, Miller’s path to a roster spot in Detroit could be more difficult than it would be in Chicago.
Whether the veteran wide receiver ultimately signs with the Bears or Lions remains to be seen, but the situation has created an intriguing NFC North competition for a proven depth playmaker.
