NFL Analyst Breaks Down How Lions’ Decision Helped Jack Campbell

Detroit Lions linebacker Jack Campbell could be heading toward a major contract decision after the team declined his fifth-year option, a move that may ultimately benefit his future earnings, according to NFL analysis.

Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer recently broke down how the Lions’ decision could position Campbell for a potential market-resetting deal in 2027, either in Detroit or elsewhere in free agency. Had Detroit picked up the option, Campbell would have been guaranteed nearly $22 million for the 2027 season.

Breer compared Campbell’s situation to other positional valuation issues in the NFL, pointing to how grouping positions together in contract formulas can significantly impact player earnings. He also referenced Baltimore Ravens center Tyler Linderbaum, whose contract path was affected by similar positional classification rules, ultimately helping him land a massive three-year, $81 million deal with the Las Vegas Raiders.

“Campbell, a first-year All-Pro last year in Detroit, could have a similar freeway to the market in 2027,” Breer noted, suggesting the linebacker’s value could spike if he continues his current level of play.

Campbell emerged as a key defensive piece for the Lions last season, earning his first All-Pro selection and solidifying his role as one of the team’s top defensive leaders.

While Detroit general manager Brad Holmes has expressed interest in working out a long-term extension, Campbell’s future remains flexible as he moves closer to free agency leverage.

Breer also emphasized that NFL contract structures often favor teams more than players, especially when positional groupings suppress market value for roles like linebackers, safeties, and tight ends.

As Campbell continues to develop, his performance over the next seasons could determine whether he becomes a long-term Lions cornerstone—or one of the league’s next major defensive free-agent prizes.
