The Chicago Bears Encouraged to Add Former Pro Bowler With Ties to Ben Johnson

The Chicago Bears made a major jump in their first season under head coach Ben Johnson, improving from five wins in 2024 to an impressive 11 victories in 2025. Despite the strong turnaround, there is still belief that the team has another level to reach as it continues building toward long-term success in Chicago.

General manager Ryan Poles has spent the past year strengthening the roster and addressing several key weaknesses. However, questions remain about whether the Bears’ offensive line is strong enough to help the team compete consistently for a playoff spot next season.

According to Sports Illustrated’s Eva Geitheim, Chicago could further improve the offensive line by targeting a familiar name for Johnson — veteran tackle Taylor Decker. The longtime left tackle was released earlier this offseason by the Detroit Lions, where he previously played under Johnson, and he is still available in free agency.

Decker, who will turn 33 in August, earned his first Pro Bowl selection in 2024 after starting 14 games for Detroit. After spending 10 seasons with the Lions, the experienced lineman appears ready for a new opportunity, and Chicago could provide an ideal landing spot with a head coach who already knows his strengths and leadership on the offensive line.
