A second person has died following a shooting that occurred during a dispute at Detroit’s Eastern Market.
According to Detroit police, the incident took place around 4:30 p.m. near Wilkins Street and Riopelle Street, shortly after the Lions’ defeat by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday.
Eastern Market, situated northeast of downtown, is a popular venue for tailgating during Lions games.
Detroit police Chief James White announced on Sunday that an Oak Park man in his 30s has been arrested in connection with the shooting.
A Detroit man in his 40s was pronounced dead at the scene, while a Detroit man in his 20s has been hospitalized in critical condition.
Chief White explained that a large altercation occurred in Shed 6 of the market, which eventually dispersed. Shortly afterward, the shooter and the deceased engaged in what appeared to be a confrontation.
The Oak Park man allegedly brandished a gun and fired multiple times.
White remarked on the dangerous combination of tailgating, drinking, and firearms, emphasizing that such violence was unwarranted on what was otherwise a pleasant day.
Police indicated that further details are being gathered and will be thoroughly investigated.
