NFL Analyst Labels Jared Goff an “Awesome Civilian”

On May 14, the National Football League officially released the full schedule for the 2026 season. With every matchup now assigned a date, fans and analysts quickly began debating some of the most intriguing games on the calendar.

One of the most anticipated contests is the NFC North showdown between the Detroit Lions and the Chicago Bears. However, the preview of that matchup sparked controversy after comments from sports analyst Chris Broussard about Lions quarterback Jared Goff.

Chris Broussard Compares Goff and Caleb Williams

Speaking on the TV show First Things First, Broussard was asked which quarterback he would prefer to start a game: Caleb Williams or Jared Goff.

Broussard used a car analogy to explain his choice, comparing Goff to a Volvo and Williams to a Porsche.

According to Broussard, Goff represents a reliable but predictable option, while Williams offers much greater upside.

“I’m shocked this is even a question,” Broussard said. “I know what I’m going to get with Goff—it will be good. But Caleb’s ceiling is much higher. You’re talking about a Volvo versus a Porsche.”

Nick Wright Calls Williams a “Superhero”

Fellow analyst Nick Wright agreed with Broussard and added his own comparison.

Wright framed the debate as a “superhero versus civilian” situation, placing Williams in the superhero category and Goff as what he called an “awesome civilian.”

“One guy has the ability to be a superhero and the other is an awesome civilian,” Wright said.

Head-to-Head Results Favor Jared Goff

Despite those opinions, the on-field results tell a different story. Since Williams entered the league with the Chicago Bears after starring at University of Southern California, he has faced Detroit Lions four times—and has yet to defeat them.

Overall, Goff has compiled a 24–10 record during that span, while Williams sits at 16–18.

While Williams has shown flashes of potential, Goff has consistently produced stronger numbers. The veteran quarterback holds nearly a 10% advantage in completion percentage, along with about 1,800 more passing yards and 24 more touchdowns.

The only major statistical category where Williams leads is interceptions, throwing seven fewer picks than Goff.

Passing Production Shows Clear Gap

Another key difference is passing production. Williams has not yet recorded a 4,000-yard season, finishing the 2025 campaign with 3,942 passing yards.

Meanwhile, Goff enters the 2026 season aiming to extend his streak to five consecutive 4,000-yard seasons, highlighting his consistency as one of the league’s most reliable quarterbacks.

Debate Centers on Potential vs. Production

Broussard’s argument focuses largely on Williams’ long-term potential. The former top draft pick could eventually surpass Goff in career accomplishments and playoff success.

However, based purely on current statistics and performance, labeling Goff as merely an “awesome civilian” compared to Williams as a “superhero” has left many Lions fans puzzled.

So far, the only major highlight boosting Williams’ reputation as an X-factor is a dramatic playoff comeback victory against the Green Bay Packers last season.

Even when rushing ability is included—an area where Williams clearly excels—the overall numbers suggest the two quarterbacks are much closer in performance than the comparisons imply.
