Detroit Lions

The Lions have found success against the Cardinals in recent matchups, but the latest Arizona squad seems much improved

Jared Goff and the Detroit Lions are eager for a crucial win after last week’s tough loss to the Tampa Bay Bucs.

Historically, the Arizona Cardinals have often been the team to provide that opportunity.

The Lions (1-1) will be traveling for the first time this season to face the Cardinals (1-1) on Sunday. Since 2017, Detroit holds a 4-0-1 record against Arizona, and Goff has an 8-1 career record against them dating back to his time with the Rams.

Detroit hasn’t dropped two games in a row since the early part of the 2022 season, something Goff believes is no coincidence.

“I do think it’s a part of our identity and who we are,” Goff said. “It starts with (Lions coach) Dan (Campbell) and hopefully spreads through the leaders and captains, but we respond.”

This current version of the Cardinals may pose more of a challenge. Arizona is fresh off one of their best games in years, defeating the Rams 41-10.

Quarterback Kyler Murray threw for 266 yards and three touchdowns, while rookie receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. caught two of those touchdown passes.

“They’re physical up front and they play well together, they play hard,” Campbell said. “It’s going to be a great test for us, and they’re playing good football right now.”

The Cardinals’ big win has placed them in an unusual spot—enjoying success.

Arizona excelled in every area, with no glaring weaknesses in offense, defense, or special teams. James Conner ran for 122 yards, Dennis Gardeck had three sacks, and Matt Prater hit a 57-yard field goal.

That’s impressive for a team that finished 4-13 in each of the last two seasons.
