Pros: White brings talent and experience; Cons: Inconsistent play and tackling issues may hinder defense.
Should the Lions pursue the former Eagles linebacker?
The Detroit Lions are likely facing the rest of the 2024 NFL season without SAM linebacker Derrick Barnes. Coach Dan Campbell recently stated that the team would be fortunate if the fourth-year linebacker could make a return this season.
Following the announcement of veteran linebacker Devin White’s release by the Philadelphia Eagles, fans began calling for the former SEC standout to join the Lions.
White was highly regarded for his impressive performances, including sacks, interceptions, and tackles for loss during his time at LSU. Pre-draft evaluations highlighted his ability to cover tight ends, receivers, and running backs, along with a strong football IQ.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers selected White with the fifth overall pick in 2019, considering him one of the most well-rounded linebackers in years. He earned a Pro Bowl selection in his third season (2021) and was part of the Buccaneers’ Super Bowl-winning team that same year.
However, his performance has declined in recent seasons, leading to the Buccaneers not exercising his fifth-year option. After signing with the Eagles this offseason, he has been inactive for the first four games of the season.
According to USA Today’s LionsWire, “Hard, hard NO! on Devin White for the Lions. Detroit doesn’t need a flighty, speed-oriented depth off-ball backer who doesn’t tackle or blitz well. Who would you replace to add him? More importantly, who do you think Brad & Dan would let go to bring him in?”
Given that Detroit’s coaching staff is reportedly satisfied with their linebacker depth, it seems unlikely that Holmes and Co. would opt to sign the 26-year-old at this point.
