Lions Focus on Ending Six-Game Losing Streak Against Cowboys, Not Vengeance for Past Mistake

The Detroit Lions vividly recall the events that unfolded during the closing moments of their Week 17 clash with the Dallas Cowboys last season. After a late-game push, the Lions found themselves in a position to potentially claim victory by opting for a two-point conversion, but an officiating error dashed their hopes.

Jared Goff had connected with Taylor Decker for what appeared to be the go-ahead score, only for the play to be reversed due to an illegal touching penalty. The officials ruled that it was Dan Skipper, not Decker, who was eligible on the play. Video replays, however, indicated otherwise, showing Decker as the player signaled to the referees, making the reversal a costly mistake.

Goff Moves On, Focuses on Breaking Losing Streak

Despite the lingering memory, Jared Goff and the Lions are not dwelling on last year’s controversial moment as they prepare to face the Cowboys again this Sunday. Instead, the veteran quarterback emphasized that the team’s primary focus is on breaking a six-game losing streak to Dallas, dating back to 2013.

“Maybe a little bit,” Goff admitted when asked if the overturned call still stings. “But it wasn’t like— I don’t want to dwell on something that was eight months ago or whatever. I don’t think we got screwed intentionally. I think it was just a mistake the officials made. It happens, that stuff happens, and you move on. I don’t think we take it personally.”

Goff made it clear that it’s less about seeking vengeance and more about turning the tide of the Lions’ recent fortunes against the Cowboys. “We haven’t beat these guys two years in a row. And that’s more on our heads. It’s time to try to stop that,” he added.

Tigers’ Postseason Run Electrifies Detroit

As the Lions work to snap their losing streak, another Detroit team is capturing the city’s attention. The Detroit Tigers are in the midst of an impressive postseason run. Managed by A.J. Hinch, the Tigers eliminated the Houston Astros in the Wild Card series and are currently tied with the Cleveland Guardians in the Divisional Series.

Goff has been keeping an eye on the Tigers’ progress and shared his excitement about their success. “It’s fun. The fans are getting to experience what they should experience,” he said, expressing hope that the Lions are also giving their supporters plenty to cheer about on Sundays.

Detroit’s Comerica Park is set to host its first home playoff game since 2014, and while Goff won’t be able to attend, he showed his support by sharing a video of Tigers’ slugger Kerry Carpenter’s game-winning three-run home run on social media. “I was watching yesterday on TV, and when that happened, I was pretty fired up,” Goff explained.

As the Lions gear up for their next challenge, their focus remains firmly on ending their losing streak against Dallas and continuing to build on their early success in the 2024 season.
