Dallas cowboys

Rico Dowdle’s emergence with the Cowboys is a genuine opportunity for fantasy football managers.

It seems a new star running back is emerging in Dallas.

In Week 4 against the New York Giants, Rico Dowdle scored a 15-yard receiving touchdown on his only catch and rushed 11 times for 46 yards (4.2-yard average). Dowdle made an immediate impact, taking a screen pass to the end zone thanks to excellent downfield blocking, giving Dallas an early advantage. This touchdown marked Dowdle’s first of the season and the sixth of his career.

After his strong performance against the Giants, Dowdle had an even better outing in Week 5 on Sunday Night Football against a tough Pittsburgh Steelers defense.

The South Carolina product rushed for 87 yards on 20 carries (4.3-yard average) and caught two passes for 27 yards and a touchdown. Those 20 carries were a season high for Dowdle, who is increasingly taking on more offensive snaps.

Cowboys RB Rico Dowdle is emerging as a fantasy star.

Before Week 5, the snap share between Ezekiel Elliott and Dowdle was 32% to 45%, respectively. Against the Steelers, Dowdle’s share increased as he played 50% of the snaps compared to Elliott’s 30%.

Elliott is no longer the superstar he once was, as reflected in his declining snap percentage. Dowdle has appeared much more explosive and productive, and it seems he’s just getting started. Expect the snap share to continue to shift in Dowdle’s favor as the season progresses.

Next up for Dallas in Week 6 are the Detroit Lions, who have been relatively solid against the run in 2024, allowing just 90 rushing yards per game. However, Detroit has given up 4.4 yards per carry and five rushing touchdowns over four games, indicating there will be opportunities for Dowdle to produce.

Another significant factor for the Cowboys’ running game has been the offensive line. After losing key players LT Tyron Smith (to the Jets) and C Tyler Biadasz (to the Commanders) after the 2023 season, the line has shown signs of improvement.

Rookies Cooper Beebe and Tyler Guyton have stepped up to fill the gaps left by Smith and Biadasz, but it will take time for them to gain comfort and chemistry with the rest of the unit. While the offensive line may not be fully in sync yet, many believe it can become a top-10 unit in the NFL as the season unfolds. By the time fantasy playoffs arrive, expect Dowdle to be running behind a strong, cohesive line.

With the running back position seemingly secure, Dowdle is likely to continue receiving the majority of carries for Dallas unless injured. While he may not be a must-start just yet, it could be time to reconsider keeping Dowdle on your bench.
