Pittsburgh Places Key Player on Injured Reserve, Elevates Linebacker for Depth

In response to a wave of injuries at the linebacker position, the Pittsburgh Steelers have taken proactive measures by elevating former collegiate standout and NFL player Ade Ogundeji to their active roster. This decision comes as the team places DeMarvin Leal on injured reserve due to a neck injury, which is expected to sideline him for the remainder of the season.

Injury Woes Challenge Linebacker Depth

The Steelers are grappling with multiple injuries in their linebacker corps. Notably, both Alex Highsmith (groin) and Nick Herbig (hamstring) have been ruled out for the upcoming game against the Las Vegas Raiders. While Highsmith has a chance to return against the New York Jets, the need for depth at the position is more pressing than ever. In addition to Ogundeji, the Steelers have also elevated Eku Leota from the practice squad to bolster their options amid these injuries. Jeremiah Moon is anticipated to start alongside T.J. Watt, providing some stability in the lineup.

A New Opportunity for Ogundeji

Ade Ogundeji, 26, was selected by the Atlanta Falcons in the fifth round of the 2021 NFL Draft. However, after being released in May, he found a new home in Pittsburgh, joining the Steelers’ practice squad. Over his three seasons with the Falcons, Ogundeji recorded 75 tackles, three sacks, and one forced fumble, primarily contributing on special teams and rotating in at linebacker. Though he never secured a starting position in Atlanta, Ogundeji now has an opportunity to showcase his skills with the Steelers as they navigate this challenging stretch.

With injuries taking their toll, Ogundeji’s elevation to the active roster could prove crucial for the Steelers as they aim to maintain competitive performance in the face of adversity. As they prepare to face the Raiders, all eyes will be on the new additions and their ability to step up in this pivotal moment.
