ESPN has identified the Dallas Cowboys as a potential candidate to trade for a running back with a unique skill set. Although Jerry Jones claims to be satisfied with the current Cowboys roster, there are evident gaps that need to be filled.

The team’s running game has been lacking, a topic that has been frequently discussed this season. Dallas neglected to draft a running back or sign a star free agent like Derrick Henry, who currently leads the league in rushing, resulting in the worst running back room in the NFL.

If Jerry and the front office are looking to make a move before next season, Chicago Bears running back Khalil Herbert could be an affordable trade option. ESPN’s Bill Barnwell highlighted Herbert as a candidate for the Cowboys, suggesting that acquiring him might only cost a sixth-round draft pick, making it an attractive proposition.

“While there isn’t a Derrick Henry available, adding another fresh player to compete with Dowdle could help. Herbert might not handle 20 carries a game, but among the 46 players with 300 carries or more from 2021 to 2023, his 4.9 yards-per-carry average is seventh,” Barnwell noted.

“In Chicago, Herbert has become an afterthought, with offensive coordinator Shane Waldron favoring D’Andre Swift and Roschon Johnson. He’s played just 27 offensive snaps over six games and hasn’t had a touch since Week 3. With his contract expiring after this season, it seems likely he’ll move on in 2025, and GM Ryan Poles could gain a pick by trading him before he leaves.”

The Cowboys clearly need assistance in the backfield, and while trading for Herbert might not create a significant impact, it’s a worthwhile gamble. When given chances, Herbert has proven to be effective, accumulating 1,775 rushing yards and 8 touchdowns in his first three NFL seasons, so what are you waiting for, Jerry?
