One unfortunate aspect of the NFL season is the loss of star players to season-ending injuries.
During a commanding victory over the Dallas Cowboys at AT&T Stadium, Detroit Lions defensive end Aidan Hutchinson sustained such an injury.
Hutchinson’s injury will sideline him for the rest of the season — unless the Lions make it to the Super Bowl — leaving a significant void in their defense.
Fans initially urged JJ Watt to come out of retirement to join the Lions. However, Watt graciously declined, expressing his enjoyment of life after football.
With the trade deadline looming, the Lions have a crucial opportunity to acquire a suitable defensive end to replace Hutchinson. With a 5-1 record, Detroit should actively pursue a replacement before the deadline.
Athon Sports’ Doug Farrar suggested a trade to bring in Za’Darius Smith from the Cleveland Browns. The Browns find themselves in a tough spot, with their starting quarterback out for the season and a slow start to the year.
“Smith is exceptional off the edge, but his true value lies in his ability to disrupt multiple gaps,” Farrar noted. “At 6-foot-4 and 275 pounds, Smith is a hybrid defender, blending speed for outside rushing and strength to overpower guards and centers inside.”
With the Browns sitting at 1-6, they appear poised to sell, having already traded wide receiver Amari Cooper to the Buffalo Bills.
“Smith signed a two-year, $23 million contract with $12 million guaranteed, keeping his cap hit manageable. With the Browns struggling, they might soon embark on a full fire sale,” Farrar added.
While Smith may not match Hutchinson’s caliber, the Lions are a balanced team in need of a stopgap. The 32-year-old could offer versatility in various formations, making him an appealing trade target for Detroit.
