On Tuesday, the Detroit Lions announced that rookie offensive lineman Christian Mahogany has been activated from the non-football illness list.
Now part of the team’s 53-man roster, Mahogany is eligible to make his NFL debut.
A sixth-round pick this year, Mahogany was a three-year starter at Boston College.
He participated in OTAs and minicamp in the spring, but a summer bout with mononucleosis landed him on the non-football illness list, sidelining him for all of training camp.
Three weeks ago, the Lions opened Mahogany’s 21-day evaluation period, and Tuesday marked the deadline to either add him to the active roster or end his season.
Last week, Lions coach Dan Campbell hinted at activating Mahogany but hadn’t reached a final decision.
“I will say he’s improved every week,” Campbell noted. “He’s made noticeable strides, and it would be tough to halt that progress.
But I’ll need to talk to Brad (Holmes) before confirming.”
The Lions didn’t need a corresponding roster move, as they had two open slots after placing Aidan Hutchinson and Kyle Peko on injured reserve and only adding Pat O’Connor.
The second slot remains open as Jameson Williams doesn’t count against the 53-man roster while suspended.
