Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love is keeping his options open regarding playing in Week 9 against the Detroit Lions.
Love exited last weekend’s win over the Jacksonville Jaguars after a groin injury worsened, making it impossible for him to continue.
Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, October 30, Love offered a hopeful outlook on his chance to play against Detroit at Lambeau Field.
“It wasn’t ideal, but it happened. I tried to keep playing,” Love said, noting he felt okay with limited movement. “I’ll take it one day at a time, focus on rehab… and try to get back as soon as I can.”
When asked if he wanted to play and whether it was realistic for him to take the field this Sunday, Love replied confidently.
“I definitely wanna play,” Love said. “I think it’s realistic.” A win over Detroit would tie the Packers with the Lions at the top of the NFC North with a 6-2 record.
The Minnesota Vikings could also reach 6-2 by beating the Indianapolis Colts, which would create a three-way tie for the division lead, as Minnesota has beaten Green Bay but lost to Detroit this season.
Packers head coach Matt LaFleur commented on Love’s condition after the team’s close win over Jacksonville, expressing concern at that time. “Obviously, high level of concern,” LaFleur told ESPN’s Rob Demovsky.
“He was struggling to move around, and it got to a point where he didn’t feel he could protect himself.”
LaFleur’s perspective seemed more positive on Wednesday, although he remained noncommittal about Love’s game status. “He’s moving better,” LaFleur said.
“We’ll push the envelope, and I know he wants to play, but we’ll see by week’s end.” If Love is unavailable, the Packers will turn to backup quarterback Malik Willis.
Willis has performed well this season, helping the Packers go 2-0 in Weeks 2 and 3 after Love’s knee injury against the Philadelphia Eagles. He also contributed in the win over Jacksonville, though that result counts toward Love’s record.
The Lions, however, will present a tougher challenge for Willis, testing Green Bay’s depth as Love recovers from his second major injury this season.
