Lions head coach Dan Campbell lends his support to receiver Jameson Williams as he faces difficulties.

For the second consecutive week, Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell expressed strong support for suspended wide receiver Jameson Williams during his Wednesday news conference. Campbell defended Williams as new off-field issues and a potential arrest surfaced regarding the former first-round pick.

“To me, I assess people by what’s in their heart, and I believe in this kid and his worth,” Campbell stated. Prosecutors are investigating whether Williams should face arrest linked to an Oct. 8 police stop, as reported by Fox 2 in Detroit.

During the stop, authorities discovered two guns in a car driven by Williams’ brother, who was pulled over for speeding. A pistol registered to Williams was found under his seat, but he lacked the concealed carry license needed in Michigan. Campbell mentioned the team was informed about the incident by Williams right after it occurred.

“It doesn’t look great,” Campbell said when asked about the possibility of Williams facing a third NFL suspension. “I understand that. However, this all coincided. It comes down to decision-making for him, and he knows he can improve. Avoid such situations. He’ll learn from this, and I still believe he’s made significant progress.”

Williams has recorded 17 receptions for 361 yards and three touchdowns over six games this season. Campbell conveyed a similar message the previous week regarding Williams’ suspension for performance-enhancing substances. He emphasized that the team trusts and supports him during this period.

“I believe in this kid,” Campbell said on Oct. 23. “I do. Unfortunately, you must face consequences. If this situation escalates, we’ll deal with it. But I know he’s been climbing back up since over a year ago. He may have slipped, but he’ll rise again. We’re here for him, and I believe he’ll be okay. He’s part of our team.”

The 23-year-old served a four-game suspension in 2023 for betting on non-NFL games while at a team facility. While the league hasn’t indicated that Williams faces a third suspension, it can discipline players for off-field behavior, especially considering the cumulative negative attention.

Chosen 12th overall in the 2022 NFL Draft from Alabama, Williams missed 11 games in his rookie season due to an ACL injury sustained in his last college game. In 24 career games, he has made 42 receptions on 81 targets for 756 yards and six touchdowns.
