A Panthers analyst issues a caution to Lions fans following the D.J. Wonnum signing

Even though the Detroit Lions were able to secure an edge rusher in free agency by bringing in D.J. Wonnum on a one-year contract, it doesn’t necessarily solve their need for a true EDGE2 opposite Aidan Hutchinson.

Wonnum certainly brings potential, especially as someone who could contribute meaningfully against the run. However, expecting him to replicate or surpass the sack production of Al-Quadin Muhammad in 2026 may be unrealistic unless he takes a major leap forward.

That said, this move fits Detroit’s current approach. The team appears focused on staying competitive without overspending—leaning on smart drafting and low-risk signings like this one to build depth.

Dean Jones, an analyst from Cat Crave, shared insight into Wonnum’s time with the Carolina Panthers and offered a measured perspective on what Lions fans should expect from him moving forward.

Based on that evaluation, Wonnum seems more suited to a rotational role on the defensive line, potentially stepping into the role previously held by Josh Paschal. He could also push 2025 draft pick Ahmed Hassanein—who is returning from an injury—as both players compete for snaps.

From a film standpoint, Wonnum shows effort and persistence when engaging blockers, particularly when trying to turn the edge. He also stands out for his awareness in diagnosing plays and filling running lanes, an area where Detroit struggled last season. That trait should be especially valuable to defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard, who faced criticism over the team’s run defense in his debut year.

Statistically, Wonnum’s 2025 season was fairly quiet. He recorded three sacks, one interception, 42 tackles, and three pass breakups. With numbers like that, he’ll need to prove himself to win over the Lions fan base.

Importantly, this addition shouldn’t signal the end of Detroit’s search for pass-rushing help. The team could still target another edge rusher early in the draft or explore remaining free agents. Veterans like Joey Bosa and Jadeveon Clowney are still available, and adding more depth at the position should remain a priority for Sheppard and the defense. Wonnum’s arrival alone isn’t enough for the Lions to ease off their efforts.
