The future of Alex Anzalone with the Detroit Lions appears increasingly uncertain as the veteran linebacker heads toward NFL free agency this offseason.
According to Tony Pauline of Essentially Sports, there is growing belief around the league that Anzalone is likely to sign with the New York Jets in 2026. Pauline reports that “odds are high” the nine-year veteran will reunite with his former defensive coordinator, Aaron Glenn, who is now the head coach of the Jets.
“Talk of Lions players following Aaron Glenn to New York isn’t new, but word in Frisco says the odds are high that Anzalone, the nine-year veteran who will become a free agent in March, will be playing for the Jets in 2026,” Pauline reported.
Pauline added that Anzalone is not expected to return to Detroit, citing his strong relationship with Glenn and New York’s need at linebacker.
“Anzalone is not expected to return to Detroit, and he’s close with ‘AG’ and wants to reunite with his former defensive coordinator. A reunion is more likely, given the Jets’ need at linebacker, as Anzalone brings the talent, leadership, and intensity the team needs at the position,” Pauline wrote.
There has been speculation that Glenn’s job security in New York could be shaky after a difficult first season. However, Pauline reports that Anzalone is not concerned about Glenn’s short-term future.
“Is Anzalone concerned Glenn may be on thin ice in New York?” Pauline asked. “I’m told the answer is no, as the 31-year-old is closing out his career and really isn’t looking long-term.”
Signs have pointed to a potential departure for Anzalone for quite some time. The Lions chose not to extend him last offseason, which led to public frustration from the veteran linebacker.
“I’m disappointed, I’ll just say that. I’m disappointed,” Anzalone said in July.
Financial factors also play a role. Detroit is already committed to significant contracts for Derrick Barnes, and Jack Campbell is expected to command a major extension in the near future — potentially exceeding Barnes’ deal.
Anzalone has been a cornerstone of the Lions’ defense, valued not only for his on-field production but also for his leadership in the locker room. His experience and intensity are qualities that would immediately benefit the Jets as Glenn looks to establish his culture in New York.
If the rumor proves true, the Lions could be preparing for a major change at linebacker, while the Jets may be lining up a proven veteran to anchor their defense in 2026.
