Alex Anzalone has continued sharing candid thoughts about his time with the Detroit Lions and other team developments, and his recent comments have drawn attention once again.
In a conversation on NFL reporter Jordan Schultz’s podcast, The Schultz Report, Anzalone reflected on several topics, including his experience under defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, the circumstances surrounding his exit from Detroit, and the departure of former offensive coordinator Ben Johnson to the Chicago Bears.
He said he wasn’t completely shocked that Johnson left, but admitted the choice of destination caught people off guard. Anzalone recalled even speaking with him in the weight room shortly before the move became public, noting that Johnson seemed uncertain about his next step at the time. He also pointed out the rivalry factor between the Lions and Bears, which made the decision even more surprising to those inside the organization.
Johnson’s move within the division raised eyebrows, especially given the strong competitive tension between the two franchises. Despite that, he went on to take the head coaching job in Chicago and later led the Bears to a playoff appearance with quarterback Caleb Williams.
Since arriving in Chicago, Johnson has also been linked to bringing in former Lions players, including wide receiver Kalif Raymond, who reportedly spoke positively about his former coordinator.
Meanwhile, Detroit has moved forward with a reshuffled offensive coaching staff after Johnson’s departure, turning to new leadership to stabilize the unit following a difficult 2025 season marked by inconsistency and offensive struggles.
Overall, Anzalone’s remarks highlight how unexpected Johnson’s exit felt inside the locker room—especially considering he left for a division rival, which added even more sting for the Lions organization.
