The Detroit Lions and Los Angeles Rams pulled off one of the most significant trades in recent NFL history.
Though the Lions appeared to get the lesser quarterback in Jared Goff, they still received a former No. 1 overall pick and a strong package in exchange for Matthew Stafford ahead of the 2021 season.
Now, several years later, both teams can safely say they have no complaints.
The Rams immediately captured a Super Bowl title with Stafford and have remained contenders since, even though his career is likely nearing its end.
Meanwhile, the Lions used the assets from the deal to assemble a roster capable of winning, led by a resurgent franchise signal-caller.
It’s one of the rare examples of a trade that benefited both sides, and remarkably, the two quarterbacks could soon overtake each other in their former team’s record books.
“Matthew Stafford is projected to surpass Jared Goff in career wins as a Rams quarterback sometime this season. Meanwhile, Jared Goff is projected to surpass Matthew Stafford in career wins as a Lions quarterback by 2027,” Brett Kollmann posted on X.
While some might argue the Super Bowl victory gave the Rams the edge, Detroit’s title hopes are far from fading.
Since arriving in Detroit, Goff has been excellent, reviving his career after being labeled the weak link in Los Angeles.
As for Stafford, he finally got the opportunity to play for a legitimate contender after years of strong individual performances on struggling Lions teams.
Few trades in league history have been as balanced as this one, with both franchises forever altered by the swap.
