The Detroit Lions suffered another major setback on Thursday night after star safety Brian Branch went down with a devastating injury. According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, Branch tore his Achilles during the fourth quarter of the Lions’ matchup against the Dallas Cowboys, officially ending his 2025 season and casting doubt on his availability for the start of the 2026 campaign.
This injury comes at a brutal time for Detroit’s secondary. The Lions already lost rookie cornerback Terrion Arnold to a season-ending shoulder injury last week, and safety Kerby Joseph has missed most of the year with a knee injury that may have long-term implications.
With Detroit’s defensive backfield severely depleted, the Lions must consider adding veteran help if they want to stay competitive in their playoff push. Fortunately, two high-profile options remain available in free agency—both former Pro Bowl and All-Pro safeties.
Justin Simmons: Top Free-Agent Safety Still on the Market
Former Denver Broncos star Justin Simmons is arguably the best safety still available. Despite going unsigned all season, Simmons recently told Kay Adams that he is open to returning and would be interested in joining a contender.
A two-time Pro Bowler and four-time All-Pro, Simmons brings experience and versatility. While his prime years may be behind him at age 32, he remains an upgrade over Detroit’s current depth.
Simmons’ 2024 stats:
59.5% completion rate allowed
81.9 passer rating allowed
PFF grades: 60.8 coverage, 53.8 run defense
Simmons has extensive experience at free safety but has also lined up in the box and slot—something defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn values in his scheme.
