Detroit Lions defensive back Brian Branch is believed to have suffered an Achilles injury in Thursday night’s win over the Dallas Cowboys, according to an ESPN report.
Jeremy Fowler of ESPN said Friday that sources told him medical tests confirmed the injury. During the game, it was initially labeled only as an ankle issue.
Branch went down in the fourth quarter and did not return, and at the time, the severity of the injury was unclear. Follow-up evaluations the next day revealed the more serious nature of the setback.
The injury cast a shadow over an otherwise strong night for Detroit, which beat Dallas 44–30 at Ford Field. The victory prevented the Lions from dropping back-to-back games for the first time in over three years and kept them firmly in the hunt for a postseason spot with one month left in the regular season.
