Chicago Bears Predicted to Sign Veteran Detroit Lions Tackle With 140 Starts as Backup Plan for Ozzy Trapilo

The Chicago Bears have moved through the early stages of free agency, but two key roster concerns still remain largely unresolved.

One of the most pressing needs is at edge rusher, though the team is expected to address that position during the 2026 NFL Draft. Another area that still requires attention is left tackle, especially with Ozzy Trapilo recovering from a torn patellar tendon suffered last season.

Because of that uncertainty on the offensive line, Bleacher Report analyst Kristopher Knox predicted that Chicago could target former Detroit Lions left tackle Taylor Decker in free agency. The move would reunite Decker with head coach Ben Johnson and potentially give the Bears a reliable option at left tackle for the 2026 season.

Knox suggested Chicago as Decker’s most likely destination, noting that the team may benefit from adding a veteran tackle while Trapilo continues to recover. Since Johnson previously worked with Decker in Detroit, the connection could make the veteran lineman a logical candidate for the Bears.

Decker, now 32, started 14 games for Detroit last season and earned a Pro Bowl nod as recently as 2024. Over his decade-long career with the Lions, he has started 140 games, providing steady play at left tackle.

Although he may not be at the peak of his career anymore, Decker still offers valuable experience and could serve as a dependable short-term option for Chicago. With Trapilo sidelined and the team currently relying on players such as Theo Benedet and Braxton Jones, bringing in Decker later in free agency could strengthen the depth of the offensive line.

For the Bears, the priority is ensuring strong protection for quarterback Caleb Williams as the team aims to take another step forward in 2026. Adding a veteran like Decker could help stabilize the left tackle position during that process.
