Cowboys Fans Try to Undermine Lions’ Win Blast Referee After Controversial Offensive Call
Dallas Cowboys fans were furious on Thursday Night Football after a controversial offensive pass interference (OPI) call on tight end Jake Ferguson stalled a potential comeback against the Detroit Lions.
Early in the fourth quarter, Dallas cut Detroit’s lead to 30–27, but the Lions answered with another touchdown to go up 37–27. With time running out, the Cowboys were driving deep into the red zone and faced a crucial third-and-3 from the Lions’ 11-yard line. Dak Prescott targeted Ferguson, who couldn’t haul in the pass as a flag dropped. To the surprise of viewers, officials ruled Ferguson for offensive pass interference—despite replays showing no obvious push-off or illegal contact.
Prime Video rules analyst Terry McAulay immediately criticized the decision, saying Ferguson simply “swam through,” which is legal, and was actually grabbed by the defender. “I don’t see offensive pass interference at all,” McAulay said, echoing sentiments from fans across social media.
The penalty was ultimately declined, and Dallas settled for a field goal to make it 37–30. But Detroit put the game away on the next drive with a touchdown run from Jahmyr Gibbs, sealing a 44–30 victory.
The OPI call wasn’t the only questionable ruling of the night. Earlier, a potential Lions safety on Prescott was overturned after officials determined he was contacted outside the end zone.
Despite the officiating drama, the Lions earned the win with a stronger overall performance, forcing three Cowboys turnovers and recording five sacks. With both teams battling for NFC playoff positioning, Detroit walked away with a deserved win—while Dallas fans were left frustrated by the officiating once again.
