The Dallas Cowboys suffered a 44-30 defeat against the Detroit Lions on Thursday at Ford Field, with quarterback Dak Prescott acknowledging that the loss was largely “self-inflicted” while also defending rookie wide receiver George Pickens.
Prescott completed 31 of 47 passes for 376 yards, throwing one touchdown and two interceptions in the game.
Cowboys’ Playoff Chances After Loss to Lions
On the team’s postseason outlook, Prescott said:
“I don’t know if I can say we control our own destiny… if we win out, we’re going to have a pretty damn good record… I don’t think it’s in our control at this point, but what we can do is control the way that we approach this game.”
Despite the loss, Prescott emphasized the importance of pride, teamwork, and preparation for the remaining four games of the season.
Dak Prescott Defends George Pickens
When asked about George Pickens’ performance, Prescott noted:
“I’m sure George would tell you it wasn’t his best game… He made some catches, he made the catch right there to put us down there at the 1 on fourth down. I think George can… and I know he’ll be better.”
Prescott praised Pickens for stepping up in the absence of star wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, who left the game with an injury.
Turnovers Key Factor in Loss
Prescott pointed to turnovers as a critical reason for the defeat:
“You can’t win a game losing the turnover battle… Whether it be the interceptions, the fumbles… We’ve got to stop that.”
He admitted that mistakes like interceptions were “self-inflicted” and emphasized that minimizing turnovers is essential for the team’s playoff hopes.
Cowboys’ Team Resilience
Despite the loss, Prescott stressed that the team is motivated to bounce back:
“I don’t think this is any deflated moment… Hope it pisses people off the right way. We use it as fuel.”
He also highlighted the contributions of other players, including running back Javonte Williams, who surpassed 1,000 rushing yards this season:
“Love him. Proud of him as a teammate… From the injury and coming to a new team, he’s had a hell of a year.”
Game Challenges and Key Moments
Prescott addressed the difficulty in connecting with Pickens, saying:
“It wasn’t to our standard, simple as that. Self-inflicted… Whether it be communication, things we’ve simply got to clean up.”
He also discussed key strategic decisions, including kicking a field goal on fourth-and-4 to keep the game within one score and the impact of offensive pass interference penalties.
“Yeah, that one was bad… Control what I can control.”
Looking Ahead
With four games left in the season, Prescott is focused on recovery and preparation:
“It’s important for guys to rest their bodies… Now it’s on us to be pros, take care of our bodies the right way, and make sure we come back Monday ready to go.”
