Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell expressed deep respect for offensive coordinator John Morton after the team’s dominant 44–22 victory over the Washington Commanders on Sunday.
Following a disappointing Week 9 loss to the Minnesota Vikings, Campbell shared that he had an open and honest conversation with Morton about making some adjustments to the offense. As first reported by ESPN’s Eric Woodyard, Campbell decided to assume the team’s play-calling responsibilities to help the Lions regain momentum, but he emphasized that Morton remains a vital part of the process.
The change appeared to pay off immediately, with Detroit improving to 6–3 after Sunday’s win. Campbell was quick to credit Morton for his professionalism and dedication despite the adjustment in roles.
“John Morton is all about the team,” Campbell said after the game. “He just wants to win and contribute however he can. He was fantastic today. He’s a grinder, a worker—he does everything possible to get us ready. Sure, it might not feel great being in that situation, but he’s a pro, and he handled it exactly the right way.”
Campbell’s comments highlighted both the mutual respect and teamwork that continue to define Detroit’s coaching staff as they push forward in the 2025 season.
