Dan Campbell Gives Stark Update on Brian Branch’s Achilles Surgery and 2026 Outlook

Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell finally addressed the injury situation surrounding defensive standout Brian Branch—and the update brought both reassurance and a sobering dose of reality.

Branch went down with a major Achilles injury during last week’s victory over the Dallas Cowboys, an injury serious enough to immediately shut down his 2025 campaign. The 24-year-old defender had once again been one of Detroit’s most electric playmakers this season, making his sudden absence a major blow to a Lions defense already stretched thin by injuries.

Campbell confirmed on Wednesday that Branch has already undergone Achilles surgery, and the procedure was successful—offering at least one positive note in an otherwise grim situation.

The difficult part of the announcement came next: Branch is expected to face an 8-to-12-month recovery window, meaning he is almost certain to lose time in the 2026 season and could miss a sizeable portion of it altogether.

It’s a tough break for one of the franchise’s rising stars. Since entering the league in 2023, Branch has been a versatile force for Detroit, logging 258 tackles, seven interceptions, 4.5 sacks, and 20 tackles for loss while lining up at safety, nickel, and hybrid positions in Aaron Glenn’s system. His breakout earned him a Pro Bowl selection in 2024, solidifying him as one of the Lions’ most valuable defensive pieces.

Detroit must now prepare for life without him. With Kerby Joseph dealing with a knee injury and Terrion Arnold already sidelined for the season, the Lions’ secondary depth is being pushed to its limits.

Despite the setbacks, Campbell made it clear he has unwavering confidence in Branch’s long-term future. The team expects him to return fully healthy—and potentially sharper than ever—once he completes his rehab.

For the next several months, the focus will revolve around recovery, patience, and future planning. And when Brian Branch eventually steps back onto the field, the Lions believe they’ll be welcoming back one of the most complete young defensive backs in the NFL.
