Following a frustrating 2025 campaign, Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell has suggested that the team could explore a notable adjustment involving offensive lineman Penei Sewell.

As Detroit reviews its roster heading into the new season, Campbell openly accepted responsibility for the team’s struggles during a media appearance last month. He acknowledged that the shortcomings ultimately fall on the organization itself, beginning with him.

Campbell explained that the team’s disappointment about failing to reach the playoffs stems from falling short of the competitive level expected within the organization. He also hinted that roster changes might be necessary, noting that introducing new players can sometimes push current players out of their comfort zones and elevate overall performance.

One of the biggest areas under evaluation appears to be the offensive line. According to Albert Breer on X, Campbell is seriously considering shifting Sewell to the left tackle position. Although the move has not been finalized, the coach emphasized Sewell’s adaptability and confidence in his ability to handle the demanding role, saying the standout lineman is capable of making the transition if needed.

The comments indicate strong belief from the coaching staff that Sewell could successfully take on blindside protection responsibilities in the 2026 season.

In addition to assessing lineup changes, Detroit has also begun making offseason roster moves. The team recently brought back kicker Jake Bates on a one-year deal. Bates has been a dependable presence on special teams during his two seasons with the club and even led the league in extra points at one stage.

However, his overall field goal success rate dipped to 79.4% in 2025, partly because he converted just four of nine attempts from beyond 50 yards. By re-signing him, the Lions are hoping he can refine his long-distance accuracy and regain the high level of reliability he showed as a rookie while the team pushes to re-enter the NFC playoff race.
