Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell has one clear message for his team heading into Thursday’s matchup: keep Micah Parsons under control. The hybrid edge rusher/linebacker has become a major force on the Green Bay Packers’ defense, and Detroit already saw how disruptive he can be during their season-opening loss.
The Lions host Green Bay in their annual Thanksgiving contest, and Campbell emphasized that the outcome will hinge heavily on how well Detroit’s offensive line contains Parsons. On Tuesday, he broke down why the star defender is so difficult to stop.
“He’s explosive. He’s a dynamic pass rusher,” Campbell said in a Lions-produced video. “He plays with effort, he’s quick off the snap, he’s strong, he’s fast.”
Campbell walked players through a clip from the Packers’ 35–25 win over the Steelers on Oct. 26, where Parsons cut through multiple blockers before sacking Aaron Rodgers.
“You watch him club the tight end, knock him aside, and he’s already winning that matchup,” Campbell explained. “Then the tackle gets on him, the protection slides his way, the guard steps in—and he still beats both of them. That’s the reality. If you commit that many bodies to him, you have to actually stop him. He won’t stop coming.”
In that Steelers game, Parsons managed to register a tackle, a sack, a tackle for loss, and a quarterback hit—each on the same play. The former Cowboys standout is putting together another standout season, with 30 tackles, 10 sacks, and a forced fumble through 11 games, putting him just four sacks shy of matching his career best.
Parsons also wreaked havoc in Week 1, when the Packers stunned the Lions 27–13. He logged a tackle, a sack, a tackle for loss, and a QB hit in that matchup as well.
With the Chicago Bears sitting atop the NFC North at 8–3, both Detroit and Green Bay know Thursday’s game is critical. A loss would make the division race significantly tougher for either team.
