Dan Campbell Reclaims Play-Calling Duties as Lions Dominate Commanders

Dan Campbell’s Detroit Lions have a simple rule: they don’t lose back-to-back games. On Sunday, their head coach made sure that streak lived on — and did so in emphatic fashion. Putting on his reading glasses and taking over offensive play-calling from coordinator John Morton, Campbell guided the Lions to a commanding 44–22 victory over the Washington Commanders, extending their long-standing “bounce-back” tradition.

With Campbell directing the offense, Jared Goff delivered one of his best performances of the season, throwing for 320 yards and three touchdowns, while Jahmyr Gibbs exploded for 142 rushing yards and three scores. The win came in front of President Donald Trump, who became the first sitting U.S. president to attend a regular-season NFL game since 1978.

“It’s been a while since he’s called plays, but he was awesome,” Goff said after the game. “He’s not just an emotional leader — he’s incredibly sharp.”

Trump arrived late in the first half to watch the Lions (6–3) put on a show, jumping out to a 22–0 lead and scoring on each of their first eight possessions. Amon-Ra St. Brown added a touchdown and celebrated with a “Trump dance,” while Jameson Williams contributed six receptions for 119 yards and a score.

“Coach really had full command today,” Williams said. “It was funny seeing him out there with the glasses — totally different vibe.”

The victory kept alive one of the NFL’s most impressive streaks: Detroit has not dropped two straight regular-season games since October 2022, when a five-game skid ended early in Campbell’s tenure.

After a disappointing 27–24 loss to Minnesota the previous week, Campbell decided to shake things up.

“It was just about changing the rhythm,” he explained. “Sometimes, a fresh voice calling plays can spark something new.”
