Dan Campbell Shares Concerning Injury Update Ahead of Clash vs. Chiefs

The Detroit Lions are heading into Kansas City a little bruised up, and head coach Dan Campbell isn’t hiding the reality.

As they prepare for their Sunday Night Football matchup against the Chiefs, the Lions are facing several injury concerns in the secondary that could significantly influence their defensive approach.

Four Defensive Starters Could Miss Action

During his Friday press conference, Campbell disclosed that safeties Kerby Joseph and Brian Branch will both miss practice and are considered game-time decisions for Sunday’s showdown with Kansas City. While Campbell noted that Branch’s ankle issue doesn’t appear serious, it remains unclear if he’ll be ready to play under the bright lights at Arrowhead Stadium.

If both Branch and Joseph are unable to go, the Lions would be without four starters in their secondary — a major issue when facing Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs’ explosive aerial attack.

Avonte Maddox’s Status Also in Doubt

To make matters worse, defensive back Avonte Maddox is also a game-time decision due to a hamstring injury. The experienced cornerback has provided valuable stability since joining Detroit, and his potential absence would further weaken the defensive backfield.

Detroit’s defense has been one of its biggest strengths through five weeks, driven by Aidan Hutchinson’s relentless pass rush and Brian Branch’s knack for big plays. But with several starters at risk of missing time, Campbell’s group faces what could be its toughest challenge yet.

The Lions have lived by the “next man up” mentality all season, and that mindset will be tested again in Week 6 as they look to maintain their strong start against the reigning Super Bowl champions.
