Detroit Lions Begin 2026 Offseason by Re-Signing Three Depth Players

The Detroit Lions began shaping their 2026 offseason roster by re-signing three depth players following their Week 18 victory over the Chicago Bears, the team announced Monday.

Detroit officially brought back offensive lineman Michael Niese, running back Jacob Saylors, and cornerback Nick Whiteside, securing familiar contributors as the organization evaluates internal depth ahead of NFL free agency and the 2026 NFL Draft.

Michael Niese Provides Offensive Line Continuity

Michael Niese, a 6-foot-5, 300-pound offensive lineman out of Dayton and Temple, appeared in eight games during the 2025 season. The 27-year-old has logged 26 career NFL appearances and offers valuable versatility across the offensive front.

Re-signing Niese gives the Lions reliable depth and continuity along the offensive line, an area the team values heavily under head coach Dan Campbell.

Jacob Saylors Returns as Special Teams Contributor

Jacob Saylors, 24, played in all 16 games for Detroit in 2025, carving out a consistent role on special teams. While his offensive snaps at running back were limited, Saylors remains a useful depth and developmental piece in the backfield.

His return reinforces Detroit’s commitment to maintaining special teams stability.

Nick Whiteside Adds Depth to Secondary

Nick Whiteside, a 6-foot-1 cornerback from Auburn Hills, Michigan (Avondale High School), appeared in nine games for the Lions in 2025 after previously spending time with Washington.

The 25-year-old recorded five tackles and three passes defended, showing flashes as a rotational defensive back and special teams contributor.

Lions Continue Early Offseason Roster Moves

All three players were exclusive-rights or reserve-level options, making their re-signings expected but important as the Lions build toward the 2026 season.

Detroit is expected to continue making similar low-risk, depth-focused roster moves in the coming days while the front office evaluates its roster ahead of free agency and the NFL Draft.
