The Detroit Lions have made roster moves ahead of their Week 17 Christmas Day matchup against the Minnesota Vikings, elevating two players from the practice squad to be available for Thursday’s NFC North showdown.
For the second straight week, the Lions have temporarily promoted tight end Giovanni Ricci and offensive lineman Kingsley Eguakun as they continue to navigate key injuries late in the season.
Kingsley Eguakun Impresses in First Career Start
Eguakun earned his first career NFL start on Sunday against the Pittsburgh Steelers, stepping in at center for veteran Graham Glasgow, who was battling a knee injury. The undrafted rookie held his own in a difficult road environment and drew praise from head coach Dan Campbell.
“I thought it was really encouraging, I really did,” Campbell said. “For his first game to go out there, I thought he competed, I thought he fought, I thought he played fast. It was very encouraging.”
Signed by Detroit after going undrafted in 2024, Eguakun has spent much of the season moving on and off the practice squad. While Glasgow has since been removed from the injury report, Justin Rogers of the Detroit Football Network noted that it would not be surprising if Eguakun starts again at center against Minnesota.
With Trystan Colon and Christian Mahogany both questionable, the Lions should have solid interior offensive line depth regardless of who ultimately gets the nod.
Giovanni Ricci Provides Tight End Depth
Ricci has played a rotational role at tight end following injuries to Sam LaPorta and Brock Wright, both of whom landed on injured reserve. Over the past two games, Ricci logged:
12 offensive snaps vs. the Rams
14 offensive snaps vs. the Steelers
His versatility has helped stabilize the position during a critical stretch of the season.
Final Elevation for Both Players
This marks the third and final practice squad elevation allowed for both Ricci and Eguakun during the regular season. If the Lions want either player available for Week 18 against the Chicago Bears, they will need to sign them to the 53-man roster.
As Detroit prepares for a pivotal divisional matchup on Christmas Day, both players could again play meaningful roles against the Vikings.
