Detroit Lions Bring Back Super Bowl-Winning Defensive Back With Eight Years of NFL Experience

The Detroit Lions have made several adjustments to their roster during the offseason, but one familiar face will remain with the team. The franchise recently confirmed that defensive back Avonte Maddox will be returning after agreeing to a new contract, though the financial details have not yet been disclosed. Maddox previously played for Detroit on a one-year deal during the 2025 season.

For Maddox, joining the Lions last year also meant returning to his hometown of Detroit. During the 2025 campaign, he played in 14 games and started three of them. In that time, he recorded 32 tackles, broke up four passes, and grabbed an interception. According to Pro Football Focus, Maddox earned a 79.1 grade while being evaluated primarily as a safety, ranking 10th among 98 players at the position.

With his return now official, Maddox is expected to maintain a flexible role in Detroit’s defensive backfield, lining up at both cornerback and safety when needed. The Lions’ pass defense struggled somewhat last season, finishing 20th in the league after allowing 217.4 passing yards per game. The team is hopeful that Maddox’s presence, combined with the return of several injured defensive standouts, will help improve that ranking in the upcoming season.

Maddox is set to begin his ninth year in the NFL. Over the course of his career, he has played in 95 games and started 44 of them. During that span, he has accumulated 302 tackles, defended 40 passes, forced nine fumbles, and intercepted five passes. Before arriving in Detroit, he was part of the championship team that won the Super Bowl with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Now back with the Lions, Maddox will be aiming to help Detroit reach that same level of success. After falling short of the postseason in 2025, the team enters the new season determined to rebound, and Maddox is expected to play an important role in that effort.
