Detroit Lions Could Disrupt Matthew Stafford’s Push for the Top Seed

The Detroit Lions are preparing for a symbolic matchup on Sunday, December 14, when they travel to face the Los Angeles Rams and former franchise quarterback Matthew Stafford. Although Stafford has squared off against his old team before, this meeting carries far heavier postseason weight for both clubs—particularly for the 10-3 Rams, who currently sit atop the NFC West.

Detroit enters the game at 8-5 with roughly a 52% probability of reaching the postseason, while Los Angeles sits firmly in playoff territory with a 98% chance, according to NFL projections. Still, the Rams can’t afford to coast. The outcome of this matchup has significant implications for their pursuit of the NFC West crown, a first-round bye, and home-field advantage throughout the playoffs.

With the Rams locked in a tight race against the 10-3 Seattle Seahawks for the division lead, every win matters. Depending on how Seattle fares against the 8-5 Colts, a Rams victory could preserve or strengthen their hold on the division. A Lions upset, meanwhile, would not only complicate Los Angeles’ path but also give Seattle a major boost.

For Detroit, the stakes are equally critical. A win would enhance their playoff outlook and potentially help them gain ground in the crowded NFC race and the closely contested NFC North

Detroit’s Playoff Outlook

After a much-needed victory over the Dallas Cowboys, the Lions’ postseason odds sit at 52%, a slight dip of 2% following the completion of Week 14 games on Monday, December 8. The NFC North picture shifted after the Bears-Packers matchup, leaving Chicago in second place and positioning the Lions just one game behind them heading into their Week 18 meeting. At the moment, Green Bay sits at a 94% playoff probability, while Chicago holds at 65%.

Interestingly, Lions fans may find themselves rooting for Green Bay in two weeks when the Packers meet the Bears. A Packers win would benefit Detroit’s playoff pursuit—an uncomfortable scenario for many, given the long-standing rivalry among all three teams.
