Detroit Lions’ DJ Reader Fires Back After NFL Films’ Harsh Critique of Brian Branch.

NFL Films recently sparked backlash with a video depicting Detroit Lions safety Brian Branch in a negative light, triggering a fiery reaction from Lions defensive tackle DJ Reader.

Branch’s Tough Outing

The one-minute clip, released after the Lions’ defeat to the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday Night Football, came under fire for its harsh take on Branch’s performance. Using Branch’s postgame comments, the video emphasized his rough night. ESPN’s Louis Riddick narrated the segment, recounting several difficult moments — including an illegal block by Chiefs receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster that led to Branch’s one-game suspension following a heated altercation.

Riddick’s narration was blunt: “It was a rough one for Lions safety Brian Branch, number 32. He got crossed up by Travis Kelce’s basketball move, beaten by Patrick Mahomes, juked by Xavier Worthy, and hit by JuJu Smith-Schuster. That sequence led to Branch’s breaking point.” The scathing review intensified criticism toward Branch during an already challenging period for the young defender.

Reader Stands Up for His Teammate

Following the video’s release, Reader took to social media to voice his frustration. He questioned NFL Films’ choice to broadcast such a slanted depiction, writing, “This is so weird to me. SMH folks will always coon for clicks tho.” Reader’s post echoed a broader sentiment among players who believe media outlets often oversimplify or sensationalize player struggles.

Public backlash arrived quickly, prompting NFL Films to remove the video from its social media pages. The decision reflected the weight of public perception and the media’s responsibility when covering player performances in a league constantly under the microscope.

Branch’s experience highlights the intense scrutiny athletes endure on and off the field. As Detroit aims to bounce back from its loss and press forward this season, the solidarity of teammates like Reader will be essential to Branch’s growth and confidence in his role.
