Detroit Lions’ offensive coordinator John Morton recently expressed his concerns about not getting wide receiver Jameson Williams involved enough in the team’s offense. Morton admitted that he “failed” Williams, acknowledging that there were opportunities to target the receiver more.
The Meeting
Morton met with Williams privately during the Lions’ bye week to discuss the issue. He emphasized that it’s a two-way street and that both he and Williams need to work together to improve. Morton praised Williams’ professionalism and work ethic, stating that he’s never been around a player with Williams’ speed and explosion.
The Statistics
Despite the Lions’ strong offense, Williams has only had 17 receptions for 289 yards and two touchdowns this season. He hasn’t eclipsed 45 yards in most games and has faced double-teams alongside Amon-Ra St. Brown. In 2024, Williams had a breakout season with 58 receptions, 1,001 yards, and seven touchdowns.
The Plan
Morton plans to be more creative with playcalling and strengthen the connection between Williams and quarterback Jared Goff. Williams, on the other hand, remains focused on the team’s success and isn’t getting too worked up about his individual stats. “I know my time coming,” Williams said. “I know it’s coming, so I’m ready whenever it comes.”
Williams’ Response
Williams has been professional about the situation, refusing to make a big deal about the limited touches. He’s focused on winning games and scoring points, and he trusts that his opportunities will come. “We want to win the game, we want to score points, and I think that’s the primary for everybody,” Goff said. “But of course, yeah, we’d love to get him involved more, get him to rock in a million different ways.”
The Importance of Williams
The Lions’ offense knows it will need Williams at his best as they face tough competition in the second half of the season. With his speed and explosiveness, Williams has the potential to make big plays and be a game-changer for the team. Morton believes that Williams will have a breakout year, and the team’s offense will continue to be potent ¹ ² ³.
